Website Background

This website was relaunched on 24 February 2005.

The site was developed as part of the Oake Community Websites Development Project supported by an award. The source of this funding was the Somerset Learning and Skills Council. The grant enabled 6 volunteers to attend website design classes at the computer room in Oake and District Hall. (Another group created the Oake and District Hall website).

The following people helped to construct this site, under the tuition of Robert Edwards from Magic Webs:

Tony Breddy, Vivian Clarke, Sue Earthrowl, Kirsten Horton, Marcia Maunder and Angela White.

We hope you enjoy your visit to our site!

AWARD

In October 2004 our high tech facilities won a prestigious award and let to us being hailed as an example to others.
We were the winners of the South West Region for Information technology category in the Calor Village of the Year competition, beating off competition from as far away as Cornwall and Herefordshire.
The prize was handed over by TV personality Hugh Fearnley-Wittingstall at an awards lunch held in London.
The ICT section was judged by UK Villages.co.uk and the company's Ellie Stoneley said: "This was a strong region wityh many very well thought out entries all of which show the massive value that can be gained from creati ve use of ICT within the wider community; however Oake was the clear winner. This tiny community is an inspiration to others - showing common sense and structure as well as tremendous determination and imagination in its approach to the provision of ICT. Through access to funding, using local volunteers, piloting projects and learning from them Oake now has an outstanding example of an ICT project, offering local training courses in a bespoke environment.
This entry demonstrates the social benefits of the village's ICT projects, which have engaged the community in consultation both on and offline, and as a consequence, the village has created a superb website which only cost £200 to set up.
This was a wonderful entry and Oake is a very deserved winner of the award."
