Oake and District

Women's Institute

Meetings are held regularly on the fourth Thursday of the month in the Pig 'n Whistle Lounge in Oake Village hall.

We held our first meeting in October,2006, when Peter Triggs entertained us with a slide show of Beautiful Britain. .At our November meeting we held our Christmas party and enjoyed mulled wine and mince pies, etc, and were entertained by some of the County organisers, with seasonal comedy sketches.

On January 25th,2007 Geraldine Marchand gave a presentation on "Fashion and Frivolity" She had connections with Bath Museum of costume and we saw unusual photographs of early fashion.

On February 22nd John Porter came to give a talk and slide show about Andrew Crosse of Fyne Court, who was know locally as the "Wizard of the Quantocks", or the "Thunder and lightening Man". Mr Crosse was an eccentric man, experimenting with copper and magnets and other substances which where essential in the pioneering of electricity. Mr Porter had researched the Crosse family history and found many interesting and amusing facts. Fyne Court was burnt down with the exception of the study, when a maid went out and left a candle burning when the house was unoccupied Fyne Court is now the headquarters of the Somerset Wildlife Trust.

During the summer we held a Treasure Hunt around Oake village and held a meeting about recycling with contributions from members.

On 25th July the group and guests attended the Castle Museum Taunton for an interesting talk about the history of Taunton.

On 16th August we had a brief business meeting at Oake hall as our meeting on 23rd was a cookery demonstration 'Something out of Nothing' at Wilton Lodge the head office of the Somerset NFWI.

We joined the Tone Valley group meeting on September 27th at Sampford Arundel.

October 25th was our first AGM with Cheese and wine, and Members' Hobbies.

We celebrated Christmas on November 22nd. We were joined by Kingston St. Mary WI Handbell ringers and a festive time was had by all.

We were entertained at the January 2008 meeting by Margaret Bigg who gave an illustrated talk on her travels in India and demonstrated how to wear a sari!

John Porter returned for our February meeting and gave us further insight into the Crosse family who lived at Fyne Court.

In March George Reekie gave us a presentation on Digital Photography and we saw magnificent views of wildlife, horse racing and off road racing. He will return in September to further inspire us!

In April Julian Luke came to talk to us about the Taunton Library and the services it provides, such as internet access. Apart from the normal lending of books to individual members it is able to supply mulitple titles for local book groups, and there is a genealogy and other records centre upstairs.

May was our resloutions meeting and members were asked to bring one shoe, and then everyone had to guess who the owner was. This proved to be hilarious.

STOP PRESS!
